Step 1: LOW DISTRACTIONS
Start training in a low distraction environment
Step 2: CLEAR VOICE-COMMAND
In a clear manner use the command “Stay” and put your hand out in front of you with your palm facing your pet
Step 3: PRAISE THEM!
Wait a few seconds, then mark command with “Yes” and praise him/her for not moving. Practice this several times
Step 4: TAKE STEP BACK
After a few practices, take a step back and say “Stay”, after about 3 seconds, step forward and reward him/her.
Step 5: LENGTHEN TIME
Gradually increase the time and the distance of “Stay”.
Step 6: INTRODUCE DISTRACTIONS
You can then start introducing distractions with command.
Step 7: OVERALL IMPROVEMENT
Building boundaries with your dog will improve their overall behaviour and obedience. Dogs who have boundaries are less likely to be anxious and insecure
