Step 1: LOW DISTRACTIONS
Start training in a low distraction environment
Step 2: CLEAR VOICE-COMMAND
In a clear voice use the command “Down” and have him/her follow the treat to the ground. Once they lay down mark command with “Good” and treat them right away
Step 3: PRACTICE
Practice step two a number a times, and gradually start taking the treat they follow away
Step 4: PRAISE THEM!
After a few practices, take a step back and say “Down”, and once they lay down on their own treat them. Do not allow them to shoot back up after treating them, have them lay down again, and continue marking the command by saying “Good”
Step 5: LENGTHEN TIME
Gradually increase the time of their ‘Down’ by not giving treat right away, but by having them wait a few seconds before you say “Good” and praising them
Step 6: INTRODUCE DISTRACTIONS
You can then start introducing distractions with the command
Step 7: OVERALL IMPROVEMENT
Building boundaries with your dog will improve their overall behaviour and obedience. Dogs who have boundaries are less likely to be anxious and insecure
Step 8: FREEDOM TO ROAM
AT FETCH we believe EVERY DOG can be taught commands and boundaries so that, where and when appropriate, they can enjoy the outdoors and can RUN FREE
