Step 1: CLEAR VOICE-COMMAND
Pick a recall command e.g. “Come” (not their name)
Step 2: LOW DISTRACTIONS
Start all training in a low distraction environment (backyard)
Step 3: GUIDE WITH LONG LEAD
Start with a long lead to guide your dog when you use the recall command
Step 4: GET THEIR ATTENTION
Call their name to get their attention
Step 5: REPEAT RECALL COMMAND
Lightly nudge their long lead and say the recall command
Step 6: PRAISE THEM
As they start moving towards you use “good” as a marker that they are doing the right thing . . .
Step 7: MAKE IT FUN!
Make it fun for them to come to you – when they reach you – praise them with a treat or affection
Step 8: REPEAT
Repeat a number of times until they understand what you want
Step 9: INTRODUCE DISTRACTIONS
Once you’re confident your dog knows the word “Come” you can take off the lead and add some distractions (someone with a squeaky toy in the backyard etc)
Step 10: GUIDE UNTIL CONFIDENT
Don’t continuously repeat the command if they are not reacting to it, they may need some guidance with the long lead again to understand the command
Step 11: OVERALL IMPROVEMENT
Only use the recall command when your dog is moving towards you
Step 12: RECALL – MOVING TOWARDS YOU
Only call your dog to you when you are sure they will come
Step 13: AVOID OVER-USE OF RECALL
Don’t waste your recall command, no point in calling if he/she is ignoring you
Step 14: MAKE IT WORTH THEIR TIME
Make it worth your dog’s while to come – treat/affection. Teach your dog a range in which to stay while walking off leash
Step 15: FREEDOM TO ROAM
AT FETCH we believe EVERY DOG can be taught commands and boundaries so that, where and when appropriate, they can enjoy the outdoors and can RUN FREE
