Training for SIT

Step 1: LOW DISTRACTIONS

Start training in a low distraction environment

Step 2: CLEAR VOICE-COMMAND

In a clear manner use the command “sit” hold the treat/toy in front of their nose  – move your hand slowly over their head.  As their nose follows the treat their tail will hit the floor

Step 3: PRAISE THEM!

As soon as they sit, mark their behaviour by saying “good” and praise them with the treat/toy and a pat

Step 4: REPEAT STEPS

Repeat steps 1 -3 until you can have them sit without luring them with a treat or toy

Step 5: INTRODUCE DISTRACTIONS

You can then introduce other distractions . . .

Step 6: SIMPLE BOUNDARIES

It’s best to practice sit before entering and exiting doors.  This allows them to have simple boundaries placed at home

Step 7: PRACTICE WITH RECALL

It’s important to practice the sit command in conjunction with recall

Step 8: OVERALL IMPROVEMENT

Building boundaries with your dog will improve their overall behaviour and obedience.  Dogs who have boundaries are less likely to be anxious and insecure

Step 9: FREEDOM TO ROAM
