Start training in a low distraction environment
Step 2: CLEAR VOICE-COMMAND
In a clear manner use the command “sit” hold the treat/toy in front of their nose – move your hand slowly over their head. As their nose follows the treat their tail will hit the floor
Step 3: PRAISE THEM!
As soon as they sit, mark their behaviour by saying “good” and praise them with the treat/toy and a pat
Step 4: REPEAT STEPS
Repeat steps 1 -3 until you can have them sit without luring them with a treat or toy
Step 5: INTRODUCE DISTRACTIONS
You can then introduce other distractions . . .
Step 6: SIMPLE BOUNDARIES
It’s best to practice sit before entering and exiting doors. This allows them to have simple boundaries placed at home
Step 7: PRACTICE WITH RECALL
It’s important to practice the sit command in conjunction with recall
Step 8: OVERALL IMPROVEMENT
Building boundaries with your dog will improve their overall behaviour and obedience. Dogs who have boundaries are less likely to be anxious and insecure
